      <image:title>Journal - Transitions take time - “Yesterday I met someone who had just moved to Lisbon, a month ago or so. She was asking me if I liked living here, what was my take on it, almost 3 years in.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Lately, I’ve been thinking again about my relationship to this city, how it’s evolved over time. And the best analogy I could ever come up with has to do with the typography and terrain of the city. See, central Lisbon is built on 7 hills, so except when you’re in Campo de Ourique, the highest and only flat neighborhood, you’re constantly walking uphill or downhill to get somewhere. And, to me at least, daily life here very much mirrors that: it’s all ups and downs, constantly. One day things will flow easily and the next be completely stuck. At times, it feels breezy and at others absolutely impossible. One week classes are full, the next see only a few souls. Same with corporate work, one season will bring much hope and excitement and the next barely any action. It is destabilizing to say the least. People here come and go, in and out, it’s often a base but not exactly home base.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Journal - Stay cool - Are you also getting slightly anxious when the temperatures rise? Since Saturday, Lisbon has been under a heat wave warning, with days at 38 degrees and not much cooling during the night. I know it’s summer and it’s supposed to get hot at some point, but when extreme weather  hits, I can’t help but worry that this will shortly become our new normal and it makes me panic a bit.</image:title>
      <image:caption>When I feel overwhelmed or overheated, I put my legs up the wall, or go into a shoulder-stand. Inversions, especially restorative ones have cooling properties and are great poses to practice in the summer.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Journal - Do your best to rest - Brené Brown says that “it takes courage to say yes to rest and play in a culture where exhaustion is seen as a status symbol”. And it’s true, it’s never been harder to fully disconnect, albeit we’ve never needed it so much.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Summer is a good time to try anyway, to devote some time to fully rest, away from our phones. And remember that resting is not only about sleeping. Dr. Dalton-Smith theorized that there are in fact 7 types of rest: physical, mental, emotional, social, sensory, creative, and spiritual rest. Each type of rest plays a crucial role in recharging our bodies and minds. I find this theory fascinating, as it makes us question the root cause of our permanent fatigue and what to do about it. Here’s her Ted Talk if you’re curious to learn more.   Use the excuse of the heat to truly slow down and tune in and give yourself a well deserved break.       <image:caption>My favorite pose for the summer is Viparita Karani or Legs up the wall. Find a wall, scoop your buttocks  against it, lift your legs, and voilà ! Rest your head and back heavy against the floor and open up your arms.  You can tie a belt over your thighs to keep them from spreading and you can place a blanket or a pillow under your low back if you prefer. This pose relieves heavy legs as it aids in better circulation in the lower limbs and also helps with low back pressure.  I do this pose almost every evening against my bedroom wall before going to bed, especially after a hot day !</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This is too short for a proper review, but if some of the following concepts resonate with you, then you might want to read that book. In it, Hendricks, an American psychologist &amp; executive coach explains why we often sabotage ourselves right when we’re about to achieve more. The upper limit problem, or that pattern where we start to worry about what could go wrong when we think things are going “too well” for us, is a ceiling that we can break through if we’re willing to understand in which of the four hidden barriers lie our own limits.  Along the way, we learn to analyze our personal zones of incompetence, competence, excellence and our zone of genius. I found this to be a great introspection exercise ! If you want to increase your tolerance for things going well in your life, here is the link to listen to the audiobook on Spotify (free with premium).  And as our quote this month, the “ultimate success mantra” from the book: “I expand in abundance, success and love every day and I inspire those around me to do the same.”</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I know this word sometimes scare people off. Some might even stop reading right here. I get it. I used to be that person! I’ve only recently started opening myself up to the concept of Chakras, and I’ve had a few epiphanies since. One of them was a few weeks ago, after I attended an Iyengar workshop here in Lisbon with master teacher Billy Konrad. The theme of the class revolved around clearing the chakras and setting intentions for the new year, spring. Upon practicing poses carefully selected in relation to each chakra and under the guidance of this longtime teacher, I experienced a sense of alignment that I’d never felt before. And the more I read about the chakras, the more it is starting to make sense to me. Chakra means Wheel and there are 7 of them in the subtle body, mapped along the spinal cord. We usually list them from the bottom up and they are as follows: the Root Chakra, located under our seat, the Sacral Chakra between the pubic bone and the sacrum, the Solar Plexus Chakra, behind the navel, the Heart Chakra, behind the heart, the Throat Chakra, behind the throat, the Third-Eye Chakra, between the eyebrows and the Crown Chakra, on the crown of the head.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Journal - Hi again, Sun ! - In Sanskrit, Surya means Sun and Namaskar is a way of greeting somebody (similar to Namaste).</image:title>
      <image:caption>Sun salutations are a classical component of Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga classes, and there are 3 main variations of these series of poses: A, B, C. It is common to go through these series a few times in the morning, not only to honor the essential light and warmth that the sun brings us every day, but also as a way to start syncing our breath to movement. The alternation of standing, forward folding and backbending postures also make for a great overall body warm up and can be a powerful moving meditation when practiced several times in a row. Try it with your eyes closed too and see how it feels. Some yoga practitioners celebrate important events such as the new year, summer or winter solstice by doing 108 sun salutations in a row! Surya A is the most simple one, starting and ending with Mountain pose (Tadasana), as pictured above. Surya B starts and ends with Chair pose and then we add Virabhadrasana I (Warrior 1) to the flow. Surya C is similar to Surya A with the addition of a low lunge (Anjaneyasana). Feeling overwhelmed by the order of the poses?       <image:caption>2023 is over! Yay!! Best news of the year if you ask me. It was a rough year for many of us, and I personally have never been so excited to ring in a new one. According to numerology, 2023 was a “7” year (2+0+2+3=7), linked to introspection &amp; turning inward but with limited personal growth. 2024, an “8” year, should bring us the success, power and authenticity we deserve after all this deep digging. Some predict a small-business and entrepreneurship boom, and I can already announce that I’ll be part of that trend. Stay tuned later this month for the unveiling of my new project. I cannot wait to officially get started! I wish you the usual healthy and happy new year, of course, but also more specifically self-acceptance, self-love and personal growth.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Journal - The balancing act of October - After spending a delicious evening with good friends visiting from Australia at Prado, I was eager to share that gem of a restaurant with the world!</image:title>
      <image:caption>It’s modern Portuguese, with produce sourced from local farmers and purveyors. The whole experience, from the food, to the decor to the service was so perfect that I wholeheartedly recommend it, to locals and visitors alike. We were lucky to get a table last minute, but this place usually gets booked months in advance so plan ahead. I eat a mostly vegetarian diet (with little fish) and the highlights of the seasonal menu for me were the Butternut squash with whey &amp; brown butter and the Oyster mushrooms with massa pimentão &amp; buckwheat. And for dessert, the Mushroom ice cream, with caramel &amp; pearl barley was surprisingly subtle yet interesting.</image:caption>
