Lisbon Wellness Guide
In recent years, Lisbon (or is it all of Portugal?) has quietly become a destination for well-being.
This is my updated, and very much non-exhaustive, list of the feel-good places I love in the city: the grocers where I shop, the studios where I practice, the cafés where I write, and the gardens, beaches and museums where I go to breathe. Everything here nourishes body, mind and soul in one way or another.
Below are the first two chapters, fresh produce and yoga. The full guide, with my favorite cafés, vegetarian restaurants, gardens, beaches and museums, is free when you subscribe to my newsletter.
Fresh produce
Consi.go
Estrela
The best neighbourhood grocery store in Estrela. They have the only tasty tomatoes in the city and incredible pineapples from the Azores, but also good olive oils, pasta and chocolate. And you're not a real Lisboeta if you don't know the Italian-Portuguese owners, Goffredo and Silvia!
Príncipe Real Market
Príncipe Real
Every Saturday morning, local farmers come to town and sell their produce on the square. One of them is Quinta do Arneiro, who also offers great weekly boxes delivered across the city.
Sabor Mercearia
Campo de Ourique
Fresh produce, all local and organic, plus a few niche brands. Quite similar to Consi.go, but up in Campo de Ourique, and also run by a lovely (French) couple.
Miosotis
Lots of products in bulk and a nice selection of household items: a sort of Whole Foods, without the pretty lighting and merchandising.
Companhia Portugueza do Chá
Housed in an old shoe store from 1880, this tea shop is a journey of the senses. Their curation of teas from all over the world is perfect, and so is their selection of teapots and accessories. A great place for a gift or a souvenir, too.
Rizoma Cooperativa
The only co-op I know of in Lisbon. Members give a few hours of service every month and get discounted prices in exchange: an affordable way to buy high-quality groceries.
Loja São
Two doors down from the stylish Café São, the deli-style store of the same name (and the same owners). It's on the pricey side, but they carry many gourmet items from international brands, and their clean beauty and household selection is great.
Yoga studios & wellness centers
Lisboa Yoga Loft
Príncipe Real
Somewhat off the radar, this studio offers the best Iyengar classes in town. Incredibly experienced teachers such as Billy Konrad teach there, and it's worth a visit for his classes alone.
Baraza
Santos
A hip studio in the hip neighbourhood of Santos, welcoming hip people for power flow classes. The space is simple and serene, and home to some of the best teachers in the city. I especially enjoy Rebecca Hajek's and Paula Andreewitch's classes there.
Yogaroom
Saldanha
The biggest studio in town, right by El Corte Inglés. The space is gigantic, with practice rooms for more than 50 students, and all that concrete gives it a bit of a factory feel, but the variety of classes has no equal in Lisbon.

Campo de Ourique
My home base for weekly classes, on Rua Almeida e Sousa.

Estrela
The newest yoga studio in Estrela: an intimate space with world-class teachers and a great motto, Techniques for Joy. I'm looking forward to the opening of their "wet terrace".
Hot Cold Club
Praça das Flores
A sauna and cold plunge center near the lovely Praça das Flores, which also doubles as a café.
