Why we all need me-time sometimes

Have you been dreaming of stepping away from daily life and all its requests for a few days ? Are you longing for a safe space to take care of yourself, on all levels: physical, mental, energetical and spiritual ? Are you craving some me-time, where all you have to do is look after you, with no one else to care for ? Or maybe all you wish for is read a book in silence, sleep in a bed with no one else in it, and eat delicious and nourishing food without even having to think about it, shop for it or prepare it…

My favorite part about being on a retreat is that, for a few days, I get to do only what I want, and what I need, just for myself. If I want to socialize, I join a conversation, if I need some alone time I find a quiet spot. I choose the soundtrack, the tempo or the silence, and I turn it on and off as I please. No colleague, boss, friends, family, partner or kids’ expectations to be met, only my own. In short, for a moment in time, I am being taken care of, so I can find myself again.

True self-care begins when we consciously take some time to reconnect with ourselves. There’s no shortcut to do that, we need to put in the time. We practice it in a yoga class, every time we step on our mat, our own sacred 2 square meters, our safe bubble, when we step back to watch our breath, listen to our bodies and observe our thoughts. Me-time could also look like indulging in a delicious meal at a restaurant for a table of one, or going on a long walk on the beach alone.

Taking care of myself is not selfish, in fact it’s the only way that I can continue to show up for others. If my well is empty, so will my offering to others be. It’s all a virtuous circle really: only when we feel connected to ourselves can we fully connect and be of service to others.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by external requests, if you’ve been putting yourself after everyone else, or if you’ve been trying to prioritize your own wellbeing, a long weekend of attuning to your own desires may be just what you need.
